FILM: Nostalgia for the Light

A lovely film by Patricio Guzman that explores astronomy, childhood, nostalgia and the legacy of military dictatorships and war. Playing at IFC in NYC through March 31. See the trailer below.

I Googled my way to to this cool interview (below) with Guzman about the making of "The Battle for Chile" and French filmmaker Chris Marker's role. During Allende's rule and the coup in 1973, film imports were banned in Chile, you had to smuggle in canisters from Buenos Aires. At the clip's end, Guzman revealed he was seeing unexpired film in fresh, unrusted cans for the first time in his life. Amazing. Every dictator knows when you're trying to hide something, you must stop those documenting.
