Tribeca, Sundance Film Festivals Embracing More Video Platforms to Distribute Titles

In case you missed, the Tribeca and Sundance film festivals are expanding their use of technology to distribute independent films to a national audience, the NYT reported over the weekend. The changes are fueled by the popularity of streaming video and VOD or video on demand services. Just as you have Netflix or YouTube channels on your DVR device at home, the idea here is, say, a Sundance- or Tribeca-branded channel on your iTunes/mobile device or Netflix or Amazon platform.

Flim festivals have long been in the business of generating buzz about specialty films. Now with VOD and related technology, the hurdle is lower for film festival firms to get into the distribution business. Tribeca, for example, has made new hires to beef up its distribution efforts.

Click here for the full list of 26 films Tribeca will release in 2011, more than double last year. Titles will be released theatrically and on VOD and other platforms.

APP NATION
Also in technology, a new report by Forrester Research forecasts the app market will explode to a $38 billion industry by 2015, as reported here by Fast Company. In 2010, apps on mobile devices pulled in $1.7 billion globally, meaning the market will grow exponentially in the coming years, the magazine reports.

(Is it really March? Deadlines, deadlines ...)
